A diagram of the forces on the brain in concussion

Image via Wikipedia

For years I have been asking my patients if they have a history of head and neck injuries including, car accidents, falls, times where they have been knocked unconscious, had a concussion or stitches to their head.

Why?

When accidents and injuries tear loose the connective tissue that holds the spine in place it creates a weakness, which allows the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position.

The area of  the body that is the most vulnerable to injury and has the most far reaching effects is the upper neck.  The top bone in the spine,  the atlas sits right underneath the skull and when the tissues around it become stretched and damaged the weight of the head will be shifted from center.

Once the position of the head is altered the position of the eyes and ears is altered as well.  The brain will initiate a reflex called the righting reflex in order to balance the eyes and the semicircular canals in the ears with the horizon.

The problem is now the head is slightly off center and the spine must adapt to that position by twisting and turning the remaining structure of the spine.  This will lead to tilting of the shoulders, the hips and imbalance all the way down to the legs leading to an unequal distribution of weight.

Body imbalance can lead to a variety of different health problems, but frequently has the same root cause…

The original head or neck injury created a misalignment of the Atlas bone at the base of the skull which led to the subsequent problems with the structure of the body, nerve and blood flow from the brain to the body.

Here is a great example from a recent research article published in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research ~ January 6, 2011

A 23-year-old female patient presented for upper cervical chiropractic care five months after a slip and fall that resulted in a concussion.  The patient presented with symptoms of vertigo and headaches consistent with post concussion syndrome.  The patient had a longstanding history of headaches that were exacerbated by the concussion and a new complaint of positional vertigo that occurred immediately following the trauma.  Significant body imbalances were noted including a leg length difference.  Specific Upper Cervical X-rays demonstrated an upper cervical misalignment.

She began to receive Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic care and the headache and vertigo was gone immediately following the first adjustment. Post X-Ray evaluation showed a significant improvement in the alignment of the head and neck.  The follow up examination the following day revealed a significant decrease in muscles spasm in the neck and the legs were balanced.

The patient’s fourth visit was two weeks following the first adjustment and at that time the patient reported a slight nagging headache had begun earlier that day, rated at 2/10, but she did not have any symptoms of vertigo.  The patient’s care was continued on a frequency of twice per month for evaluations and progress monitoring. She was evaluated with Atlas Orthogonal protocol for necessity of adjustment and her symptoms were monitored at every evaluation. She continued to report a complete resolution of vertigo and intermittent headaches rated as 2/10 that occurred at an average of two hours/day.

Who do you know that has had a concussion?  Do they have a chronic health problem?  Is there a connection to the upper neck?

Only an upper cervical specialist could tell you.

An infant

Image via Wikipedia

Do babies need upper cervical chiropractic care?

It depends…are they misaligned?

Not all children are misaligned.  In my experience approximately 50% of the kids that I evaluate are misaligned.  In babies it is an even lower percentage.  But when the spine is misaligned as a result of birth trauma it can have significant effects shortly after birth.  Colic and other digestive conditions, ear infections, sleeping problems and more have been associated with upper neck misalignments.

An example is found in the January 28, 2011 issue of the scientific periodical, the Journal Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health.  There is a case study documenting improvement in a child with gastroesophageal reflux disease, constipation, and head deformation undergoing chiropractic care.

The authors of the study explain that the American Academy of Pediatrics defines gastroesophageal reflux (GER) as the passage of gastric contents into the esophagus while GER disease (GERD) is the presence of symptoms or complications from GER.

In this case, a 5-month-old girl was brought in for chiropractic care with gastroesophageal reflux, constipation and a deformed head known as “plagiocephaly”. The girl had been suffering with GERD since birth and was experiencing approximately 8-10 regurgitations per day consisting of 2-4 tablespoons of gastric content. The history noted that the reflux was exacerbated by movement of the baby or sitting up on her own for over 5 minutes. The infant girl was breast-fed since birth and her diet was supplemented with small amounts of baby oatmeal.

A chiropractic examination was performed and showed multiple areas of muscle tightness, reduction in joint movement and muscular asymmetry. Palpation of the spine also showed areas of spinal fixation and muscular changes. It was determined that vertebral subluxations were present in the infant’s spine.

Chiropractic care was initiated on this infant girl to correct the subluxations and correct the subsequent nerve system interference. As a result of care, the child’s medication for the reflux disease was reduced and eventually eliminated. The study also notes that her constipation was resolved, her muscle tone had returned to normal and her head asymmetry was significantly reduced.

Should all infants be checked for spinal misalignments?

Doesn’t it make sense for a child to grow up with an aligned spine?

What’s the worst that could happen the infant is evaluated and found not to be in need of any care.  Or a problem is identified in a little spine that would have negatively impacted the rest of that person’s life.

To me it just makes sense…what about you?

First cervical vertebra, or Atlas

Epilepsy or Seizures are a problem for many Americans.  Frequently a person will be prescribed medications to cover up the effects of the seizures.  Many people do not want to just cover up the symptoms but try to find the underlying cause of the seizures and eliminate it.  Seizure medications do have serious side effects in many people including liver problems, blood disorders, rashes and altered thinking patterns.

In the February 3, 2011 issue of the Journal Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research, a case study research article documents the improvement of a 9-year-old girl with Occipital Lobe Epilepsy undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care. In this case, improvement was shown with specific chiropractic adjustments being rendered to the upper cervical (neck) spine.

The study notes that epilepsy is a condition characterized by two or more seizures, brief attacks of altered consciousness and abnormal motor activity. The worldwide population with epilepsy is estimated to be 10.5 million, 25 percent of whom are children under the age of 15.

In this case, a 9-year-old girl was brought to the chiropractor by her mother. The child was suffering with uncontrollable blinking of the left eye. She had been previously brought to a neurologist who diagnosed the girl with occipital epilepsy. The neurologist recommended an anti-convulsion medication but the girl’s mother decided to seek upper cervical chiropractic care rather that subject her daughter to drug therapy.

The girl started suffering from uncontrollable eye blinking approximately two weeks before the visit to the chiropractor. Additionally, she had shown other associated symptoms including seizures, tics, spasms, dizziness, and fainting. Other conditions the patient suffered from included constipation, seasonal allergies, rashes, itching, and skin lesions.

A upper cervical chiropractic examination was performed that included a variety of specific procedures including x-rays designed to look for misalignments in the upper cervical spine. These tests confirmed that the girl was a candidate for upper cervical chiropractic care. Care was initiated with a specific adjustment to the top of the neck.

Within six days of the initial visit, the girl’s mother reported that the left eye blinking had decreased in frequency. Shortly thereafter, it was noted that her symptoms were progressively decreasing and were only present at night. After two months of care, the eye blinking had completely stopped. The blinking only returned once after that but disappeared again following another adjustment.

In his conclusion, the author summed up this case and explained how chiropractic can help those with epilepsy by saying, “The relationship between an upper cervical subluxation and epileptic conditions in children exists but remains elusive. Evidence from this case supports the elimination of the upper cervical subluxation in the resolution of occipital lobe epilepsy signs and symptoms. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder and it is the opinion of this author that it should be treated conservatively in children before medical and surgical intervention.”

Woman pregnancy month by month.

Image via Wikipedia

Back pain in pregnancy is very common. It is estimated that between 50% and 80% of women experience some form of back pain during pregnancy.  Such pain can range from mild pain associated with specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain if not properly addressed.

Studies show that lower back pain in pregnancy usually occurs between the fifth and seventh month of being pregnant. In some cases, pregnancy pain in the lower back can begin as early as 8 to 12 weeks after becoming pregnant.  Women with pre-existing lower back problems are at higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in the pregnancy.

Neck and Mid-Back pain are also common during pregnancy.  When a woman’s body begins to change during pregnancy, pre-existing spinal misalignments have a tendency to get worse.  As the center of gravity begins to change, ligamentous structure and hormones begin to be altered.

Most women respond very well to upper cervical chiropractic during pregnancy.  conditions like sciatica, back and neck pain, digestive issues and headaches are just a few of the conditions that pregnant women see terrific results.

The results of upper cervical chiropractic is an aligned spine and pelvis which can make for a much easier delivery for both Mom and baby.  Recently had a Mom who was properly aligned with her second pregnancy.  She reported that the delivery was much easier and required no forceps or vacuum extraction.

In my office we are blessed to help many women who are pregnant with a variety of different health issues.  Frequently we can work without x-rays initially based on the situation.  Ivette is one of our patients who began her care when she was pregnant and is so glad that she did.  Here is her story…

“When I first started my treatment with Doctor Davis I had problems with my upper back and neck area, my lower back and my right hand would get numb and there were times when I couldn’t move it at all.  I also had a lot of digestive problems.

I decided to come because my Mom was doing so well with her therapy.  When I first came in I was 2 months pregnant with my second child and immediately I started to notice a difference in all of the symptoms.

Even my morning sickness greatly improved!

I would not only recommend the therapy that NUCCA Chiropractors offer but I would highly recommend Dr. Davis’s office.  The whole staff truly cares about their patients.

Now thanks to them I am finally in control of not only my health but also my life!”

If you or someone you know is pregnant, it’s a great time to get your spine in proper alignment!

The link between the upper neck and face pain or numbness, or what’s called Trigeminal Neuralgia or Tic Doulereaux has been studied for many years.  Face pain can be excruciating based on patient reports.  This is one of the most common reasons why depression and suicide are common with this debilitating condition.

When a person suffers a head or neck injury such as a car accident or fall, the process can begin.  But even a long standing compression on the upper neck such as oral surgery or extensive dental work can be the initiating factor.  Frequently the trauma may have happened months, years or even decades earlier!  The body’s ability to adapt is phenomenal.  But the adaptation process only lasts so long and eventually symptoms will develop.  The symptoms that develop are unique to the individual.

Research is very encouraging to face pain patients.  In one study Dr. Hinson was studying the effects of upper cervical specific chiropractic care on 10 patients diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia.  After only 10 weeks pain measurements decreased by 77%!  Dr. Hinson also found that depression scores had decreased and all patients had seen there pain distribution decrease.  Of the 10 patients in the study 3 of the 10 had no more attacks by the end of the 10 weeks and the other 7 had much less.

In my own office I have seen great changes with Face Pain as well.  One patient who had suffered with excruciating pain following a dental procedure along the right side of her face head and neck found help through the NUCCA procedure, after trying Acupuncture, medications, general chiropractic manipulation and many other treatments.  We saw a 90% reduction in all symptoms in 8 weeks.

If you know someone who is struggling with face pain or numbness or they have been diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia, then an upper cervical spine evaluation should be performed to see if a head or neck trauma could be the underlying cause.

X-ray of U.S. girl, age 16 years 8 months, wit...

Image via Wikipedia

When a 2-year-old little girl falls down the stairs what is the typical response?  The parents would pick her up and check on her see if there are any notable injuries.  If they were concerned about her in any way the parents would take that little girl to the emergency room and get her checked out medically.  They may perform X-Rays, a Cat Scan, and other testing.  If all those tests come back negative then they would release her back to her parents and tell them that she is going to be okay.

But what if she wasn’t okay.  What if when she fell and hit her head the ligaments and muscles that connect the head and neck were damaged.  Creating a slight misalignment at the atlas (the top bone in the spine).  Once that bone is misaligned and locked out of it’s normal position it creates a weakness.  This weakness allows the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position.  In this stressed position frequently one of the legs will appear shorter than the other when laying flat on your back.  And one hip will be lower than the other when in the standing position.

Now in this new stressed position the body begins to grow.  With the head slightly tilted to one side and the hips uneven that little girl hits her growth spurt at the age of 8 and a curvature begins to develop.  By the time that little girl is 13 she has a 12 degree Scoliosis like the one you see in the picture.

Now lets look at a different scenario.  This time the Mom of that 2-year-old little girl is a patient of an upper cervical chiropractor.  So after little Candice isn’t sleeping well and just isn’t acting like herself after the fall, she is brought into our office to have her alignment evaluated.  During the exam the little girl is found to have a one inch leg length discrepancy!

After the exam the Candice is adjusted in her upper cervical spine.  Her legs immediately level…the Mom is amazed!  That night Candice sleeps great again and is just like herself again the next day.  Over the last 4 months Candice has only needed one other adjustment and the crying and problems sleeping have not returned.

So what were we able to save Candice from?  Scoliosis?  Ear infections?  ADHD?  Headaches?  Digestive problems?  We don’t know.  But without a doubt Candice will now grow up a healthier girl because her spine has been restored to it’s normal alignment.

The most common times for a child to develop a misalignment are after birth, when they begin to lift their head, when they begin to crawl and when they begin to walk.  After those milestones a child should only be evaluated if they have had a head or neck trauma such as a fall or car crash.  About 50% of the kids that I evaluate are misaligned.  There will be no other time better than in childhood to correct those problems and allow that child to grow up as healthy as possible.

It is much easier to grow healthy kids than it is to repair damaged adults!

A big wave is breaking in Santa Cruz, California.

Dr. Davis here from Vista California

Here in Southern California, surfing is a very popular activity. Surfing is great exercise and a lot of fun for millions of Americans but it can really do a number on your spine. One of the most troubling parts of surfing is the fact that you have to keep your neck in extension as you lay on the board to paddle out.  As mentioned before on this blog the most vulnerable positions for your neck to be in are all the way back in extension and all the way to the side in lateral bending.  Most surfers that I see are severely misaligned due to falls or other non-surfing related injuries.  Once that spine is misaligned…putting it into that extreme extension position on a regular basis will lead to increased Degenerative Disc Disease and eventually symptoms.  Some of the most common symptoms surfers experience is back and neck pain, numbness and tingling into the arms and legs and other related symptoms.

There is hope for those that want to surf throughout their lives…the key is alignment.  If the spine is misaligned the degeneration will occur at an increased frequency and quality of life will decrease.  The problems will typically begin in the neck and then translate through the spine until the condition is corrected.  If the spinal problems are corrected and the alignment is maintained throughout life, most people will be able to surf as long as they want to.

Here is an example of a man whose ability to do one of his favorite activities was greatly affected until he got the problems in his spine corrected.

“When I first came to see Dr. Davis I was having severe lower back pain and it was greatly diminishing my quality of life. I had struggled with it for over 15 years but it had really gotten a lot worse in the past 2 years. Both at work where I have to stand for long periods and when I went surfing which I love to do.

Since beginning care my back pain has subsided enough to not impact anything that I do in life negatively. I can surf without any pain! I can stand for hours without pain at work. Surfing without back pain is a huge blessing!

I was a huge skeptic when I came to Breath of Life, but I figured I had nothing to lose. I gave it a year and I am so glad that I did. I feel so much better than I did a year ago! And I really enjoy knowing that Dr. Davis and I both worship the same awesome God!”

Gary B.   November 2010

Who do know that is like Gary?  Suffering every time they go to do the activity that they love.  Maybe you don’t even have the symptoms yet and just want to make sure that your spine is in a good alignment so that you can continue to do what you want to do throughout your life.  Either way an evaluation of your alignment by a qualified Upper Cervical Chiropractor is in order.

At Breath of Life we have seen incredible results with people who are suffering with a variety of different physical and psychological conditions.  Depression, anxiety, mood disorders have improved regularly.  Here is an example of a research study that was performed with patients who had been diagnosed with Depression….

A small study of 15 patients with depression and correlating atlas subluxation were treated.  Beck Depression Inventory was used before and after a Grostic upper cervical chiropractic correction of the upper cervical sublxation complex using the Orthospinology approach. Results achieved indicated significant improvement in depression test scores (t=3.96, df=14, p<0.001). Data supports hypothesis that correction of the occipito-atlantalaxial subluxation complex may lead to a reduction in depressive symptomology.

Early chiropractic hospitals in Davenport, Iowa treated patients with various mental illnesses with a geat deal of success. These illnesses included severe disorders like schizophrenia and psychotic depression. Various later studies showed that upper cervical care has had success with conditions such as autism and ADD/ADHD and so it is hypothesized that depression “may also benefit from adjustment of the atlas”. Fifteen (15) patients were recruited for this study which have a previous medical history of depression and who also have occipito-atlantoaxial subluxation. Precision upper cervical x-rays were taken and upper cervical adjustments were made using the KH4 Orthospinology instrument. Such instruments do not involve direct touching of the patient by the practitioner. The Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) baseline measurement for depression was used before and after treatment. Results indicate that 11 out of 15 (~73%) patients experienced marked improvement, 2 patients worsened and 2 patients had only a minor improvement in depressive symptoms. Adjustment was limited to C1 (atlas).

More research is required as this was a small study and other controls and considerations would need to be made, however it does give an indication that upper cervical chiropractic may well be a suitable treatment protocol for depressive symptamology.

It stands to reason there is a correlation between mental disorders and upper cervical subluxation. For me it’s not a hypothesis any longer. Even if a patient does not improve symptomatically with their depression…how many other vital bodily functions are improving as a result of having a subluxation free spine!

What is NUCCA?  Is it a new dance craze?  Is it some exotic fruit?  No.  NUCCA stands for the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association.  It is a group of specially trained chiropractic doctors who focus on the correction of head/neck misalignment.  There are only approximately 200 NUCCA Doctors in the world.  This form of health care is very unique and very effective at restoring balance to the spinal column and entire body.  Restoring head/neck alignment has helped 1000’s of people to live healthier lives and recover from 100’s of different chronic health conditions including:

  • Acid Reflux
  • ADD
  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Autism

This is just the A’s of the conditions that have been helped or completely eliminated by Upper Cervical Care…

How it Works

The neck is called the cervical region of the spine.  The first neck vertebrae also known as the Atlas or C-1 is a small ring like bone located at the top of the spine directly below the base of the skull.  This area surrounds the brain stem. The Brain Stem region controls many extremely important functions in your body; including the function of the ears, eyes, nose and throat, balance of the muscles that surround the spinal column, the heart, lungs, digestive organs, male and female organs etc.  When the spine is subjected to stress it can become misaligned beginning at the Atlas vertebrae.  The spine will then compensate for the misalignment of the head and neck by the rest of the spine moving and twisting out of their normal positions.  This head/neck misalignment will result in a distortion of the messages being sent from the brain to the body resulting in a variety of health conditions.

Just when you thought you checked everything…have you checked to see if your head is on straight?
