How does a Brain Stem Subluxation (a problem in the upper neck) cause you to not be able to sleep?  Are you a person who has a hard time falling asleep?  Staying asleep?  Or you just can’t turn your brain off?  Maybe you do sleep but you wake up in the morning just as tired as you were when you went to bed?  Even when you get enough sleep?

It has been known for some 40 years that waking and consciousness depend upon nerve cells within an area of the brainstem called the reticular formation. The Brain stem is a part of the brain that dips down into the top part of you neck (upper cervical spine).  These nerve cells activate portions of your brain that produce wakefulness and in turn sleep.

Magoun states that the central reticular formation of the brain stem exerts ascending (up to the brain) and descending (down from the brain) influences upon the cerebral cortex and upon the motor outflows from the spinal cord.  Tractionization of the brain stem by a misalignment in the upper neck causes a disruption in the function of the reticular formation of the brain stem resulting in a variety of postural changes verified by the National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research Foundation.

So when a person has accidents and injuries that tear loose the connective tissue that hold the spine in place it will create a weakness and allow the spine to begin to breakdown and lock into a stressed position.  And this is a progressive condition…so the longer the spine is left in that state the worse it gets.  This tractionization on the brain stem is the underlying cause of the sleep problems in so many of our patients.  A Simple postural and neurological evaluation by an upper cervical specific chiropractor will tell you whether or not you have this common condition.

Who do you know that isn’t sleeping?  We spend a third of our lives in bed…how important is it to our work, family, and personal lives that our sleep is good and restful?

If your life is not what it should be because of sleeping problems, then you should be evaluated by an Upper Cervical Specialist as soon as possible.

Get your head on straight and get back to sleeping the way that you should.

Dr. Davis here from Vista CA….the success rate of NUCCA Spinal Care at getting to the cause of headaches in our office is about 90-95%.  Headaches can be caused by many different things but upper neck problems have to be one of the most common.  Here is another example from our office of Raquel who was referred into our office by her boss and is sure glad that she did…30 years of headaches?  Here is her story…

“When I first came to see Dr. Davis as was having headaches for over 30 years.  A constant achy pain that was making me want to lay down and go to sleep all the time.  The pain pills that the Doctor gave me weren’t helping.  I was also having high blood pressure that I was taking medications to reduce, pain and numbness into my left arm and pain into my right foot.

Since Dr. Davis began correcting the problems with my alignment all of these conditions have significantly improved!  My headaches are almost completely gone.  I haven’t taken any pain pills in over a month!  My blood pressure is down.  I don’t have to take the medication anymore.  The pain in my left arm and foot are much better!  I feel more relaxed and I am sleeping so much better.  I strongly recommend this type of treatment!!!

I am so much happier and more comfortable all over!  Thank you!”

Raquel S.                                        October 2010

Headaches were just the tip of the iceberg when it came to what was happening with her body…high blood pressure, arm symptoms and more were all be caused by a misaligned upper cervical spine.

Are you misaligned?  How is it affecting your body?  Everyone is different but if you have headaches the chances that you are misaligned in the upper neck is extremely high…especially if you have ever had a head or neck trauma.

Dr. Davis here again from Vista…You know there are many different type of chiropractic care out there….why do I choose to practice NUCCA?  Because it is reproducible, predictable, measurable and extremely effective.  NUCCA frequently works where others approaches haven’t…as in Janna’s experience below.  She had seen several other chiropractors and other types of practitioners…but only the NUCCA method was able to give her long lasting results…check out her story below…

“When I first came to Breath of Life Chiropractic as was having mid to lower back pain and stiffness constantly for approximately 15-20 years.  I was also having headaches on a weekly basis for the past 10 years.  I was tired of complaining about being in pain to my husband and my family.

Since starting care my headaches have almost completely disappeared!  I have no back pain!  I am sleeping so much better than before.

I would just encourage people to try for themselves this care, to see how well this type of Chiropractic care really works!  I have really enjoyed the friendly staff at Breath of Life Chiropractic and the calm relaxing environment.”

You may have tried chiropractic approaches that attempt to force the spine back into place.  That is not what the NUCCA System does!  There is no popping, cracking or twisting of the spine…NUCCA uses the principles of physics, mathematics and biomechanics to work with your body to shift the spine back into a normal alignment.  Just like Spinal Engineering!!!

Dr. Davis here again from Vista…if you are still having trouble sleeping after our post the other day on sleeping than the next place to look is to your diet.  Here’s 10 ways to eat and drink your way to better sleep this week…

  1. Avoid before-bed snacks, particularly grains and sugars. This will raise blood sugar and inhibit sleep. Later, when blood sugar drops too low (hypoglycemia), you might wake up and not be able to fall back asleep.  Don’t dine after Nine P.M.
  2. Increase your protein intake with your evening meal.  The body needs protein to repair itself while you sleep.  Ideally the evening meal should be high in good protein and good fat and very low in carbohydrates.  Preferably only vegetables as a carbohydrate source.
  3. Eat foods high in the amino acid tryptophan.  Many people have heard about the effects of tryptophan in turkey that puts you to sleep after a thanksgiving meal. Tryptophan is the raw material that the brain uses to build the relaxing neurotransmitters melatonin and seratonin.  But there are additional foods that contain tryptophan which include; Avocado, beans, nuts, eggs, hummus, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds.
  4. Eat a small piece of fruit after dinner.  Fruit can help tryptophan cross the blood brain barrier.
  5. Reduce or avoid as many drugs as possible. Many medications, both prescription and over-the-counter may have effects on sleep. In most cases, the condition, which caused the drugs to be taken in the first place, can be addressed by lifestyle changes.
  6. Avoid caffeine. A recent study showed that in some people, caffeine is not metabolized efficiently and therefore they can feel the effects long after consuming it. So an afternoon cup of coffee (or even tea) will keep some people from falling asleep. Also, some medications, particularly diet pills contain caffeine.
  7. Avoid alcohol. Although alcohol will make people drowsy, the effect is short lived and people will often wake up several hours later, unable to fall back asleep. Alcohol will also keep you from falling into the deeper stages of sleep, where the body does most of its healing.
  8. Lose weight. Being overweight can increase the risk of sleep apnea, which will prevent a restful night’s sleep.
  9. Avoid foods that you may be sensitive to. This is particularly true for dairy and wheat products, as they may have effect on sleep, such as causing apnea, excess congestion, gastrointestinal upset, and gas, among others.
  10. Don’t drink any fluids within 2 hours of going to bed. This will reduce the likelihood of needing to get up and go to the bathroom or at least minimize the frequency.

Once the spine is back in a normal alignment from NUCCA then the body can begin to utilize these habits even more effectively.  Once the head is on straight everything changes!!!  Find out more about NUCCA and a wellness lifestyle by going to our website www.nuccawellness.com  or give us a call at 760-945-1345

Dr. Davis here from Vista…On this blog we frequently speak of the misaligned spine and how it affects the health and function of our bodies.  Over the weekend I spent some time with a legendary NUCCA Doctor named Dr. Robert Brooks and he broke down the misaligned spine into such a clear and precise way that I wanted to share it with you…

The first thing that happens is there is an accident or injury that tears loose the connective tissue that holds the spine together.  This creates a weakness that allows the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position.  Lying down one of the legs is shorter and one is longer, standing up one hip is higher and one is lower, the head is tilted to the side, there is a twisting of the frame of the body…muscles are imbalanced, movement is abnormal and it creates a progressive condition that over time will wear down the structures of the body.

The key to understanding why the misaligned spine is so devastating to the function of the body is to see how closely related the nervous system is to the structure of the body.  When the structure is misaligned it can affect the brain, brainstem, the spinal cord and the nerves that make your body work.  Nerves from the brain primarily do 4 things..

1.  Every movement we make is from a nerve

2.  Everything that we sense or feel

3.  Control and regulation of every body function: (digestion, circulation, respiration, reproduction, body chemistry, etc.)

4.  And how we relate to the outside world is through the nervous system

So how many different problems could be associated with a misaligned spine?  There are over 100 different conditions in the literature that have either been directly caused by misalignments in the spine or associated with the misalignment.

How important is it to have your spine in alignment?  It is a no brainer to keep your spine in alignment throughout life.  Why is NUCCA so effective at restoring the spine to its normal position and then keeping it there throughout life?  In order to balance the spine the head must be balanced over the top of the spine.  Where the head goes the rest of the spine will follow.  If the atlas which sits underneath the head has been misaligned by accidents or injuries usually to the head, neck or spine then that will begin to shift the alignment of the entire rest of the spinal column creating an imbalance at the pelvis and an apparent short leg.  Many people will say that they can get those legs even…but how long will they stay that way?  That is the difference with upper cervical procedures like NUCCA and Orthospinology is the stability of the alignment after the correction.

Manipulation feels good and helps lots of people…but I don’t want to have to get adjusted once or twice a week to maintain my alignment.  I would rather have a long-term solution…like NUCCA.

Having trouble sleeping?  Falling asleep?  Staying asleep?  Feeling rested in the morning?  These problems can all be related to problems in the upper neck.  Check out our other blog posts related to how upper cervical misalignments can lead to poor sleep (https://nuccadoctordavis.wordpress.com/category/sleep-problemsinsomnia/) Also a number of other good suggestions from www.mercola.com and other sources are outlined below.

  1. Make sure your head is on straight!  Misalignments in the upper neck will put stress on your entire body and will affect the quality and quantity of your sleep.  You must see a qualified Upper Cervical Doctor (NUCCA) in order to assess alignment of your body.
  2. Listen to White Noise or Relaxation CDs. Some people find the sound of white noise or nature sounds, such as the ocean or forest, to be soothing for sleep. You can use an air purifier or a fan to create this noise or use a CD.  A relaxation/meditation option to listen to before bed is the insight audio CD (http://www.mercola.com/forms/insight_focus.htm) you can check it out at this website.
  3. Sleep in complete darkness or as close as possible. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the room it can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland’s production of melatonin and serotonin. There also should be as little light in the bathroom as possible if you get up in the middle of the night. Please whatever you do, keep the light off when you go to the bathroom at night. As soon as you turn on that light you will for that night immediately cease all production of the important sleep aid melatonin.
  4. No TV right before bed. Even better, get the TV out of the bedroom. It is too stimulating to the brain and it will take longer to fall asleep. Also disruptive of pineal gland function for the same reason as above.  Read something instead…but not suspenseful books that will keep you up all night!
  5. Wear socks to bed. Due to the fact that they have the poorest circulation, the feet often feel cold before the rest of the body. A study has shown that this reduces night waking.
  6. Avoid using loud alarm clocks. It is very stressful on the body to be awoken suddenly.  Especially the buzzer feature.  If you must use an alarm make sure that the radio is on and it is set at the lowest possible setting in order to wake you up but not startle you and keep them as far away from the bed as possible, preferably at least 3 feet.
  7. Journaling. If you often lay in bed with your mind racing, it might be helpful keep a journal and write down your thoughts before bed.
  8. Melatonin and its precursors. Ideally it is best to increase levels naturally with exposure to bright sunlight in the daytime and absolute complete darkness at night. One should get blackout drapes so no light is coming in from the outside.
  9. Get to bed as early as possible. Our systems, particularly the adrenals, do a majority of their recharging or recovering during the hours of 11PM and 1AM. In addition, your gallbladder dumps toxins during this same period. If you are awake, the toxins back up into the liver which then secondarily back up into your entire system and cause further disruption of your health.
  10. Keep the temperature in the bedroom no higher than 70 degrees F. Many people keep their homes and particularly the upstairs bedrooms too hot.
  11. Take a hot bath, shower or sauna before bed. When body temperature is raised in the late evening, it will fall at bedtime, facilitating sleep,
  12. Remove the clock from view. It will only add to your worry when constantly staring at it… 2 AM…3 AM… 4:30 AM…
  13. Keep Your Bed For Sleeping. If you are used to watching TV or doing work in bed, you may find it harder to relax and to think of the bed as a place to sleep
  14. Don’t Change Your Bedtime. You should go to bed, and wake up, at the same times each day, even on the weekends. This will help your body to get into a sleep rhythm and make it easier to fall asleep and get up in the morning.
  15. Make certain you are exercising regularly. Exercising for at least 30 minutes every day can help you fall asleep. However, don’t exercise too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake. Studies show exercising in the morning is the best if you can do it.

We spend a third of our lives sleeping!  Make sure it is as relaxing and fulfilling as possible!

Have anyone ever heard that before?  That what happens when you get older…you get used to it.  You may have heard this from a friend, a family member or even a doctor.  Blaming your health problems on aging or “arthritis” is very common.  It is a rarely the case.  Are bodies are designed to be healthy…so when they are not, generally there is a reason for that symptom or condition.  Here is an example of a young mother in her 30’s-Veronica, who was told these things prior to coming to see me.

“I had been in a three car collision and had never quite been the same after that.  I had trouble sleeping, a severe loss of energy, forgetfulness and my body always seemed to ache all over.  My doctors gave me pills for the symptoms and I was told “that’s what happens as you get older” and that “you get used to it.”  Well, I didn’t want to get used to it…so I looked into chiropractic.

At first I was a bit apprehensive.  I didn’t know what to expect.  But my apprehension ceased after my first adjustment.  I felt some of the pressure in my neck, upper back, lower back and hips release.  Gradually my headaches, insomnia, forgetfulness, shortness of breath, digestive troubles and my constant back pain went away.

I was able to regain my energy and now I can go jogging and cycling with my kids!   I feel like myself again, full of life and energy.  Thank you Dr. Davis for making each visit one that I look forward to:).”

Veronica J.

Who do you know that has health problems that are limiting their life?  They can’t exercise, play with their kids, work comfortably or whatever it may be for them.

Have they ever had their spine and nervous system evaluated to see if they could be helped?  It usually isn’t because you’re getting older!
