Dr. Davis here from Vista…On this blog we frequently speak of the misaligned spine and how it affects the health and function of our bodies.  Over the weekend I spent some time with a legendary NUCCA Doctor named Dr. Robert Brooks and he broke down the misaligned spine into such a clear and precise way that I wanted to share it with you…

The first thing that happens is there is an accident or injury that tears loose the connective tissue that holds the spine together.  This creates a weakness that allows the spine to break down and lock into a stressed position.  Lying down one of the legs is shorter and one is longer, standing up one hip is higher and one is lower, the head is tilted to the side, there is a twisting of the frame of the body…muscles are imbalanced, movement is abnormal and it creates a progressive condition that over time will wear down the structures of the body.

The key to understanding why the misaligned spine is so devastating to the function of the body is to see how closely related the nervous system is to the structure of the body.  When the structure is misaligned it can affect the brain, brainstem, the spinal cord and the nerves that make your body work.  Nerves from the brain primarily do 4 things..

1.  Every movement we make is from a nerve

2.  Everything that we sense or feel

3.  Control and regulation of every body function: (digestion, circulation, respiration, reproduction, body chemistry, etc.)

4.  And how we relate to the outside world is through the nervous system

So how many different problems could be associated with a misaligned spine?  There are over 100 different conditions in the literature that have either been directly caused by misalignments in the spine or associated with the misalignment.

How important is it to have your spine in alignment?  It is a no brainer to keep your spine in alignment throughout life.  Why is NUCCA so effective at restoring the spine to its normal position and then keeping it there throughout life?  In order to balance the spine the head must be balanced over the top of the spine.  Where the head goes the rest of the spine will follow.  If the atlas which sits underneath the head has been misaligned by accidents or injuries usually to the head, neck or spine then that will begin to shift the alignment of the entire rest of the spinal column creating an imbalance at the pelvis and an apparent short leg.  Many people will say that they can get those legs even…but how long will they stay that way?  That is the difference with upper cervical procedures like NUCCA and Orthospinology is the stability of the alignment after the correction.

Manipulation feels good and helps lots of people…but I don’t want to have to get adjusted once or twice a week to maintain my alignment.  I would rather have a long-term solution…like NUCCA.

After looking at that study on depression and upper cervical care recently I was reminded of a patient who has seen his depression go away and stay away under our care here at Breath of Life…David started care almost 18 months ago and continues to see the results that he was seeing when he wrote this almost a year ago…here is his story…

“When I first came to see Dr. Davis my wife and I weren’t sure what to expect.  We had tried other chiropractors, acupuncture, drugs and supplements.  But my health continued to deteriorate.  I was diagnosed with having Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, insomnia and depression.  My x-rays dramatically showed neck and spinal cord misalignment and the logic of correcting this condition to improve nerve flow made sense to us.

But we were a bit skeptical at first because progress was slow, but in a few weeks we could see step by step gains.  The irritable bowel syndrome was the first to abate.  Then I stopped taking my sleeping pills to see if I could sleep without them…and I am able to sleep well for 8-9 hours a night.  The fibromyalgia pains throughout my body have now completely recessed and the fatigue is improving too.  Last fall I had lost 35 pounds in 2 months because of my health issues.  Now my appetite is better and my weight is back to a healthy level.  The depression is completely gone.  We are so grateful that we found this place!

Dr. Davis is a caring, affirming provider and has given me the encouragement I needed over the past 6 months to overcome.  He often reminds us that time is needed to complete healing and though sometimes we have been impatient we see he was right.  I have come a long way and I feel like I am reclaiming my life and wellness again!

The moment we stepped into the office we could sense a warm Christian atmosphere of sincere caring health providers.  Dr. Davis and Linde have been so supportive and Dr. Davis’s technique has proven beneficial in changing my life!”

At Breath of Life we have seen incredible results with people who are suffering with a variety of different physical and psychological conditions.  Depression, anxiety, mood disorders have improved regularly.  Here is an example of a research study that was performed with patients who had been diagnosed with Depression….

A small study of 15 patients with depression and correlating atlas subluxation were treated.  Beck Depression Inventory was used before and after a Grostic upper cervical chiropractic correction of the upper cervical sublxation complex using the Orthospinology approach. Results achieved indicated significant improvement in depression test scores (t=3.96, df=14, p<0.001). Data supports hypothesis that correction of the occipito-atlantalaxial subluxation complex may lead to a reduction in depressive symptomology.

Early chiropractic hospitals in Davenport, Iowa treated patients with various mental illnesses with a geat deal of success. These illnesses included severe disorders like schizophrenia and psychotic depression. Various later studies showed that upper cervical care has had success with conditions such as autism and ADD/ADHD and so it is hypothesized that depression “may also benefit from adjustment of the atlas”. Fifteen (15) patients were recruited for this study which have a previous medical history of depression and who also have occipito-atlantoaxial subluxation. Precision upper cervical x-rays were taken and upper cervical adjustments were made using the KH4 Orthospinology instrument. Such instruments do not involve direct touching of the patient by the practitioner. The Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) baseline measurement for depression was used before and after treatment. Results indicate that 11 out of 15 (~73%) patients experienced marked improvement, 2 patients worsened and 2 patients had only a minor improvement in depressive symptoms. Adjustment was limited to C1 (atlas).

More research is required as this was a small study and other controls and considerations would need to be made, however it does give an indication that upper cervical chiropractic may well be a suitable treatment protocol for depressive symptamology.

It stands to reason there is a correlation between mental disorders and upper cervical subluxation. For me it’s not a hypothesis any longer. Even if a patient does not improve symptomatically with their depression…how many other vital bodily functions are improving as a result of having a subluxation free spine!
