Woman pregnancy month by month.

Image via Wikipedia

Back pain in pregnancy is very common. It is estimated that between 50% and 80% of women experience some form of back pain during pregnancy.  Such pain can range from mild pain associated with specific activities to acute back pain that can become chronic back pain if not properly addressed.

Studies show that lower back pain in pregnancy usually occurs between the fifth and seventh month of being pregnant. In some cases, pregnancy pain in the lower back can begin as early as 8 to 12 weeks after becoming pregnant.  Women with pre-existing lower back problems are at higher risk for back pain, and their back pain can occur earlier in the pregnancy.

Neck and Mid-Back pain are also common during pregnancy.  When a woman’s body begins to change during pregnancy, pre-existing spinal misalignments have a tendency to get worse.  As the center of gravity begins to change, ligamentous structure and hormones begin to be altered.

Most women respond very well to upper cervical chiropractic during pregnancy.  conditions like sciatica, back and neck pain, digestive issues and headaches are just a few of the conditions that pregnant women see terrific results.

The results of upper cervical chiropractic is an aligned spine and pelvis which can make for a much easier delivery for both Mom and baby.  Recently had a Mom who was properly aligned with her second pregnancy.  She reported that the delivery was much easier and required no forceps or vacuum extraction.

In my office we are blessed to help many women who are pregnant with a variety of different health issues.  Frequently we can work without x-rays initially based on the situation.  Ivette is one of our patients who began her care when she was pregnant and is so glad that she did.  Here is her story…

“When I first started my treatment with Doctor Davis I had problems with my upper back and neck area, my lower back and my right hand would get numb and there were times when I couldn’t move it at all.  I also had a lot of digestive problems.

I decided to come because my Mom was doing so well with her therapy.  When I first came in I was 2 months pregnant with my second child and immediately I started to notice a difference in all of the symptoms.

Even my morning sickness greatly improved!

I would not only recommend the therapy that NUCCA Chiropractors offer but I would highly recommend Dr. Davis’s office.  The whole staff truly cares about their patients.

Now thanks to them I am finally in control of not only my health but also my life!”

If you or someone you know is pregnant, it’s a great time to get your spine in proper alignment!

Open bottles of Extra Strength Tylenol and Ext...

Image via Wikipedia

Dr. Davis here from Vista CA…

According to the FDA, taking too much Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol and Excedrin, will kill you and the government agency also admits this chemical is the leading cause of liver failure in the U.S. Acetaminophen is responsible for 56,000 emergency room visits and 456 deaths annually, according to studies done between 1990 and 1998. In spite of this, billions of doses are sold each year.

Tylenol, Aleve, Advil, Aspirin, Excedrin and other medications called NSAIDS are frequently taken by people for years on a daily basis.  Many doctors will tell them that taking these medications are okay to use all the time.  Unfortunately that is not true!  In fact the regular ingestion of NSAIDS (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) is very dangerous.

The July 1998 issue of The American Journal of Medicine stated the following:

“Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone. The figures of all NSAID users would be overwhelming, yet the scope of this problem is generally under-appreciated.”

One of our patients recently understood this fact that he couldn’t keep popping pills to cover up his symptoms and instead he needed to address the underlying cause.  Here is John’s story…

“I was having pain from my neck into my right arm all the way to the hand.  I was also getting numbness, tingling and weakness into my right hand.  My activity level was way down.  The condition started about 7 years ago following a fall.  But the current episode started about a year ago.  I had gone to medical doctors, neurologists, had MRI’s, x-rays and physical therapy.  I was prescribed corticosteroids several times and I was taking 4-6 Tylenol every day.  I knew that I could not continue living the way that I was…I was on a downward spiral.  And I was poisoning my body with Tylenol!

I am about 3 months into my care at Breath of Life and the pain in my neck and arm are almost completely gone!  The strength in my arm is coming back as well…I am able to do push ups again!  I am also feeling more relaxed and rested overall.  My energy level has increased significantly.  My balance and coordination are also greatly improved.  My sense of well-being and my ability to handle stress are also much better!

For the first month or so I had very little results because my condition was so severe.  But as I have held my corrections longer and longer periods of time the nerves have been able to heal.  Thank you very much!”

Dr. Davis here from Vista CA….the success rate of NUCCA Spinal Care at getting to the cause of headaches in our office is about 90-95%.  Headaches can be caused by many different things but upper neck problems have to be one of the most common.  Here is another example from our office of Raquel who was referred into our office by her boss and is sure glad that she did…30 years of headaches?  Here is her story…

“When I first came to see Dr. Davis as was having headaches for over 30 years.  A constant achy pain that was making me want to lay down and go to sleep all the time.  The pain pills that the Doctor gave me weren’t helping.  I was also having high blood pressure that I was taking medications to reduce, pain and numbness into my left arm and pain into my right foot.

Since Dr. Davis began correcting the problems with my alignment all of these conditions have significantly improved!  My headaches are almost completely gone.  I haven’t taken any pain pills in over a month!  My blood pressure is down.  I don’t have to take the medication anymore.  The pain in my left arm and foot are much better!  I feel more relaxed and I am sleeping so much better.  I strongly recommend this type of treatment!!!

I am so much happier and more comfortable all over!  Thank you!”

Raquel S.                                        October 2010

Headaches were just the tip of the iceberg when it came to what was happening with her body…high blood pressure, arm symptoms and more were all be caused by a misaligned upper cervical spine.

Are you misaligned?  How is it affecting your body?  Everyone is different but if you have headaches the chances that you are misaligned in the upper neck is extremely high…especially if you have ever had a head or neck trauma.

I have previously talked about a rare condition called Brachioradial Pruritis (BRP) on this blog and how NUCCA Spinal Care was able to get to the underlying cause of the condition and eliminate it by correcting problems in the neck (see https://nuccadoctordavis.wordpress.com/2010/03/05/nucca-and-brachioradial-pruritis/ for more info).

The Journal of Dermatology describes Brachioradial pruritus (BRP) as a localized itching or burning sensation of the arm. BRP is an enigmatic condition with a controversial cause; some authors consider BRP to be a photodermatosis (sensitivity to sunlight leads to changes in the skin) whereas other authors attribute BRP to compression of cervical nerve roots (nerves in the neck).

Several dermatologists have done research into this condition that makes sense with what I am seeing in my office.  They sought to investigate the presence of neuropathy (nerve related problem) in patients with BRP.  They performed studies of the median, ulnar, and radial nerves (nerves leaving the lower portion of the neck that go into the arm) in consecutive patients with BRP, including measurement of sensory and motor function.

Included in the study were 7 patients, 5 men and 2 women, with an average age of 58.3 years (range: 42-72 years). Of the patients, 4 (57%) had abnormal responses on testing that were diagnostic for cervical radiculopathy, and 3 of these patients had prolonged distal latencies of the nerves tested, which may be interpreted as sensory motor neuropathy secondary to chronic radiculopathy.  The fourth patient had polyneuropathy secondary to diabetes mellitus.

They authors concuded that BRP may be attributed to a neuropathy, such as chronic cervical radiculopathy. The possibility of an underlying neuropathy should be considered in the evaluation and treatment of all patients with BRP.

In another study the Medical charts of patients with BRP seen in the Division of Dermatology of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center between the years of 1993 and 2000 were retrospectively analyzed. On the basis of clinical index of suspicion, some patients had undergone radiography of the spine.  Of the 22 patients with BRP, 11 had cervical spine x-rays. The x-rays showed cervical spine problems that could be correlated with the location of pruritus in each of these 11 patients.  All 11 showed the connection!

The authors concluded “The main cause of brachioradial pruritus (BRP) is not known but there is evidence to suggest that BRP may arise in the nervous system. Cervical spine disease may be an important contributing factor.”

NUCCA Spinal Care is focused on correcting structural problems with the alignment of the head, neck and spinal column.  When the spine is misaligned it will cause degeneration of the spine and interference with the function of the nerve system.  Frequently in my office looking at the x-rays of hundreds of patients with upper cervical misalignments I will see that a majority of the degeneration is in the lower cervical bones…C5, C6 & C7.  This is the area where the nerves leave the spine and go into the arm and hand.  By correcting the alignment of the spine the pressure can be relieved and the degeneration and nerve irritation can be stopped.

If you have itching or burning in your arms or have been diagnosed with Brachioradial Pruritis than an upper cervical evaluation is warranted.  If you are in the San Diego CA area than go to our website at www.nuccawellness.com to find out about our evaluation special.  If you are not in the area go to www.nucca.org or www.upcspine.com to find a doctor in your area today!

Dr. Davis here…

Have you ever said “I’ve never been the same since that car accident”?  Frequently someone will be involved in a car crash that will significantly impact their body.  They may think “it will just go away with time”…only to never see it go away.  What logic tells us is if what’s causing it doesn’t go away…it won’t go away either.  If the upper cervical spine is injured by a car crash the spine and the nerves will never be the same until that injury is corrected and the body can get a chance to heal again.  This was the cause with Linda…she was involved in a head on collision more than 40 years ago and was never the same.  Here is her story…

Neck Pain and Headaches for 42 years

“I first came to see Dr. Davis at my daughter’s referral.  I had neck pain and headaches for over 40 years since I had a head on collision.  More recently it had gotten worse.  I was now getting a new sharper pain in my neck and severe muscle spasms and headaches into my left ear.  Both of my arms were having numbness and tingling in them…the left was worse.  I also noticed that I was getting a lot of congestion in my sinuses.

Since beginning care at Breath of Life over 80% of my neck pain, headaches are gone.  I am only 3 months into my care and I continue to improve.  My numbness and tingling in my arms has subsided.  I am feeling significantly more relaxed, rested, and stronger.  My moods are much better, my digestion and breathing is much improved.  And my sinuses are much clearer.”

Dr. Davis from Vista…

Do you notice that you have a bad side?  Maybe you see that your right knee bothers you, you have headaches on the right side and your right shoulder hurts.  Or the left side of your lower back is painful, left ear ringing and your left foot hurts…etc.  Or have you been told that your right knee has severely degenerated, but your left one is normal…no degeneration.  Haven’t you had your right knee as long as your left knee?

Frequently we hear that one side of the body is doing worse than the other…What does this mean?

When there are accidents and injuries to the head and neck a condition known as an Atlas Subluxation can develop which will lead to a misaligned spine.  See our post on the misaligned spine here for more information https://nuccadoctordavis.wordpress.com/2010/07/13/is-one-of-your-legs-shorter-than-the-other/

Once the spinal column is misaligned…just like a car that is out of alignment you will get unequal stress to different parts of the car…you will also get uneven stress to different parts of your body when there is a misalignment.  That is exactly what Donna was feeling when she first came to our office…here is her story…

“When I first came to see Dr. Davis I was experiencing unexplained pain in my left wrist, since I am left-handed this began to concern me and it began to keep me from doing everyday chores, etc.

To begin with the pain in my wrist has completely gone away and pain from an old injury to my left foot and ankle has greatly improved.  All of this without any medication!  Since I am an advocate for natural remedies versus drugs this outcome is a great joy to me!

I also have been able to begin an exercise program of walking and find I now can walk well without pain.  Also my breathing while walking has greatly improved…I am thrilled!!

I would encourage anyone who needs to come in for care based on my experience.  Through the knowledge Dr. Davis has to allow our bodies to heal themselves…my life has vastly improved…body, mind and spirit!!!

I have really enjoyed the friendly, peaceful and professional atmosphere of Breath of Life.  But I believe what has impressed me the most of all is the high level of integrity of the office.  Dr. Davis has taught me how to learn to relax again and let my body heal itself….thank you!!!
